Actors of Yesteryear "Haunt" Manhattan Hotel
Former SRO hotel now treasure of "the new Times Square"

Rare historic photographs, part of the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of New York, greet visitors and guests at the Mayfair New York, a small European-style boutique hotel in the heart of the theater district. One of the most memorable of the photos is an original of Lauren Bacall reclining, in a sultry pose all her own, on Harry Truman's piano

Proudly displayed in the cherry-paneled lobby, the Grace Kellyss and Frank Sinatras of another era set an appropriate tone for a hotel built at the turn of the century as lodging for budding Broadway stars. Over the years, it served as an "SRO" hotel offering lodging to the city's homeless and welfare population.

Today, the fully renovated Mayfair New York (no relation to the Mayfair on Park Avenue) is a haven for theater lovers from all over the world and, as one guest put it, "an oasis in the middle of Manhattan - a jewel in the crown of Times Square." Its 78 guest rooms are elegantly appointed with Beidermeier mahogany furniture and feature such modern amenities as computerized wall safes, remote controlled cable televisions, and telephones in each bath.

Located at 242 W.49th Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue, the moderately-priced Mayfair is adjacent to the Eugene O'Neill Theater and directly across from St.Malachy's the famed actors chapel. It's romantic restaurant, the Garrick, continues the theatrical theme. Named for the 17th century Shakespearean actor, David Garrick, the intimate dining room features classic cuisine reminiscent of the 1940's favorites and a popular three course Prix fixe pre-theater menu.
